Managing Childhood Fever at Home: When to Visit a Pediatrician

Understanding fever in children

Fever is a common symptom in childhood and often signals the body fighting an infection. Most fevers are not dangerous, but knowing how to respond and when to see a pediatrician can reduce anxiety and prevent complications.

Safe home-care steps

  • Monitor temperature: Use a digital thermometer. Fever is typically defined as 38°C (100.4°F) or higher.
  • Hydration: Offer frequent fluids—water, oral rehydration solutions, or breast milk for infants—to prevent dehydration.
  • Comfort measures: Dress the child in lightweight clothing, keep the room comfortably cool, and use a lukewarm sponge bath if very uncomfortable.
  • Medication: Paracetamol or ibuprofen can reduce fever and discomfort. Use age-appropriate formulations and dosages; never give aspirin to children.

Warning signs — visit a pediatrician

  • Infants younger than 3 months with any fever.
  • High fever (over 40°C) or fever lasting more than 48–72 hours.
  • Difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting, refusal to drink, or signs of dehydration.
  • Seizures, severe lethargy, unresponsiveness, or a rash that doesn’t fade when pressed.
  • Any concern from a parent that the child looks very unwell.

What to expect at the clinic

At an outpatient pediatric visit, the doctor will take a detailed history, perform an exam, and may order tests such as rapid antigen tests, blood tests, or urine analysis depending on symptoms. Early assessment helps identify treatable causes and guides appropriate use of antibiotics or supportive care. If your child needs follow-up care, the clinic team will explain warning signs and a clear plan for home care.
